Crosswinds Golf Course is a “hidden gem” located in the middle of the Savannah/Hilton Head airport. Crosswinds open in 2000 and has been named by Savannah Magazine as one the best golf courses in the Savannah area.
The condition of the teeing grounds, fairways, and greens are superb. The greens, however, have a number of difficult pin placements that we encountered during our round. The course layout is challenging yet fair.
Crosswinds offers five sets of tees so the golfer can decide on the distance he or she wants to play the course. It is more of a “shot-makers” course than a distance course. The fairways and greens are well bunkered and you must have proper distance control, especially in your short game. Choosing the proper club was made easier with their extremely accurate GPS system located on all carts.
If walking, the yardage book for sale in the pro shop, is excellent. They also have the hole layout on each of the tee signs. The pace of play for a weekend round was amazing. We played in less than four hours. This was due, in part, by the accurate marking of the distances on the course.
Crosswinds has an interesting course design with five par 3s and five par 5s which, in my opinion, helps the beginning golfer to score better. The par 4s are the most difficult to par.
One of the best amenities is the lighted driving range and Par 3 executive course. The Par 3 course is well designed and very challenging, even for the advanced golfer. The holes range in distance from 90 to 160 yards, with water coming into play on five of the nine holes. It is a terrific way to work on your short game. The par 3 course is a good option for the traveler who has a layover at the airport.
I highly recommend Crosswinds for an enjoyable and affordable golfing experience. They offer local residents, including Beaufort County, reduced rates. For more information on rates and starting times, call Crosswinds at (912) 966-1909 or visit www.playcrosswindsgolfclub.com
